On Thursday 16th June St Catherine’s hosted a Spanish cultural workshop with flamenco and a poem by Lorca. 4 Spanish flamenco artistes from Andalucia led the session, demonstrating and teaching this passionate form of dance and music. With flowers in their hair, the Year 9 and 10 pupils stamped and swayed to the rhythm of the guitar and cajon, a special flamenco drum. The girls were taught a dance and how to stamp and clap in the flamenco rhythm. They all had a chance to play the cajon and the session finished with a full dance routine.
Alongside the active workshop, pupils were introduced to a poem by theAndalucian poet Federico Garcia Lorca, whose poetic works are used as songs in the flamenco tradition. There was an introduction to the vocabulary, with analysis of the language and symbolism used. This will be useful for the study of Spanish literature which has recently been introduced to the GCSE course.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in which the rich cultural tradition of southern Spain was appreciated by all the pupils.
