Music

Music plays a vital role in the life and community of St Catherine’s. Our vision is to instil a love of music for life and to give our girls every opportunity to take part in and experience music making. There are many choirs and ensembles on offer, including St Catherine’s Singers, the Orchestra, The Sienna Singers and Glee Choir.

There are formal and informal concerts given throughout the year. Working closely with the Drama department, singers and instrumentalist have been involved in the school productions of Little Women, Oriana and the Lion King.

We have a highly dedicated and professional team of peripatetic staff. All orchestral instruments, voice, piano, guitar and percussion are available to learn. We act as a centre for Associated Board exams and many pupils enter each year, achieving excellent results.

The curriculum is broad and varied, covering music from the Western classical tradition, Jazz and Blues, World Music, Musical Theatre and Folk Music. Girls will be encouraged to explore these topics in a practical way using keyboards, guitars, percussion and music software provided by the department. They are also welcome to come to the Department in their free time and create a band, pursue any musical interest of their own or simply practise. Emphasis is also placed on music theory and we are happy to prepare girls for ABRSM theory exams. At GCSE and A level we study the Edexcel syllabus. The department is equipped with workstations for each student and we use Sibelius Seven and Mixcraft 6.

Concert visits are organized as well as master classes by visiting professional musicians and singers. A number of our students have gone on to read music at university and are now pursuing professional music careers.
