Years 9 and 10 have both attended day retreats at our new centre – Aylesford Priory in Kent. The retreats are run by staff from Southwark Catholic Youth Service based in the restored 17th Century North Barn at Aylesford Priory – owned by the Carmelite Community.
Year 9 attended just before Christmas and their day was based around the Art work found around the Priory as well as the history of Aylesford. The Carmelite community had a monastery here since 1215 up until the Reformation when it was closed. In 1949, the community was able to purchase the site and restore the Priory again. The Year 9s were kept very busy learning as well as creating art work and they thoroughly enjoyed their day.
This week, Year 10 had their retreat day, focused on pilgrimage. Aylesford is on the old Pilgrims’ route to Canterbury and travellers would often stop at the Priory for rest and refreshment. The Year 10s explored their own faith journeys during the day and enjoyed a valuable ‘time out’ from their daily routine to reflect.
