Award-Winning Poet, Moniza Alvi, visits St. Catherine’s School
October 8th, 2008
Moniza Alvi, the award-winning poet, visited St. Catherine’s School on 8th October, as part of the School’s National Poetry Day celebrations. Moniza Alvi was born in Lahore, Pakistan and came to England when she was a few month’s old. She grew up in Hertfordshire and studied at the Universities of York and London.
She has published several poetry books and won in 2002 the Cholmondeley Award. This prestigious award for poetry is given annually by the Society of Authors to distinguished poets. Her most recent books are “Split World: Poems 1990-2005” and “Europa“, both published this year by Bloodaxe. Moniza Alvi discussed poetry and read some of her poems to all students in years 6 to 11. She told the students how she was drawn to write poetry by her love of language and that she found the rhythm and magic of poetry a perfect vehicle to express her feelings. She has explored multicultural themes in many of her poems inspired by her background.
