Pastoral Care

St Catherine’s is a special place in which girls thrive and the School motto “Not Words but Deeds” epitomises our beliefs.

The School aims to provide a secure and happy learning environment where pupils’ relationships are fostered in an atmosphere of trust and love.  We continuously strive to build up self-esteem, self-motivation and self-discipline in a framework of wise pastoral care, and feel justly proud of the achievements of our girls.

Role of Form Tutor

  • The Form Tutor is the first and most important contact for the pupil and will see her at least twice daily.
  • The Tutor is the established link between home and school
  • The Tutor has the best overall picture of a pupil’s development both academically, personally and socially.
  • The Tutor has an oversight of a pupil’s achievement across the whole school and is responsible for bringing this together through recording and reporting systems.

The special status accorded to the Form Tutor enables her/him to:

  • Develop good relationships with pupils where they can grow and develop within an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect;
  • Make decisions which are in the best interest of the pupil;
  • Recognise each girl’s gifts and talents and encourage her to use them to achieve her potential and beyond;
  • Monitor and track the achievement of pupils on a regular basis and intervene quickly if need be.

Personal, Social and Health Education

PSHE focuses on lifeskills and personal development in a changing society and is an integral part of the curriculum throughout the school. Weekly time-tabled provision allows Form Tutors to follow a full, varied programme, concentrating on such matters as health, personal relationships, social awareness and Citizenship.

Careers

It is our expectation that all pupils should leave the school and move on to higher education or training or other career opportunities. We recognise that the provision of effective careers education and guidance is an essential part of the preparation of all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

The careers education at St Catherine’s is aimed at developing the ability to:

  • Make informed decisions now and for the future, drawing on self-knowledge
  • To make informed decisions now and for the future by making effective use of information and guidance
  • To make and implement action plans.

By the end of the following Key Stages all pupils will:

KS3

  • Have a greater awareness of themselves (qualities, abilities, weaknesses, limitations).
  • Know where the Careers Library is located, and have accessed some information there.
  • Be aware of the implications of GCSE options.
  • Have an opportunity to attend “Take Your Daughters to Work” Day
  • Have the opportunity to use KUDOS.

KS4

  • Be aware of the options post 16. 
  • Choose an appropriate route and act to secure this option, having researched the necessary information, advice and guidance.
  • Know where the Careers Library is located, and who the school Careers Co-ordinator is.
  • Be interviewed by a member of Connexions staff.
  • Be given the opportunity to participate in Futurewise profiling.

KS5

  • Have a good idea of the sort of career they want to follow
  • Have identified the necessary course/qualifications needed from HEI to pursue career
  • Have received training on CV and Personal Statement, interview technique and writing a letter of application.
  • Have participated in a number of relevant work-experience placements.

Procedures

A member of the Senior Management Team (Deputy Head) is the line manager for Careers Education and Guidance.

The Careers Co-ordinator liaises with the pupils, Careers Advisers and Head of Sixth Form to enhance delivery within the time and resources made available.

Careers Advisers from Connexions are available for confidential Careers guidance.
