Subject : Art and Design

Awarding body:  Edexcel:

Art - Advanced Subsidiary AS (6031) - (6032)
Art - Advanced GCE A2 (6033) - (6034)

Course content and examination requirements:

The GCE in Art and Design is designed to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design. Successful students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice and be able to produce artwork that embraces a range of ideas.

This course offers rich opportunities for visual study that encourage breadth and depth in the development of students’ visual language.

In order to comply with established good practice and to ensure continuity and progression from GCSE courses, there is a mandatory requirement that students submit supporting studies for each unit of work at AS and A2. Supporting studies will contain evidence of students’ visual thinking and conceptual understanding, recording their responses to chosen ideas. These studies can be seen as a combination of sketchbook (s), worksheets, and an appropriate range of different scale and media working for recording exploratory studies. Supporting studies should contain evidence of the development and refinement of students’ ideas, including reference to the work of others, showing understanding of meanings, contexts and the ability to make skilled judgements, using an appropriate visual/verbal form.

Entry requirements:

GCSE Art – Grade A minimum.
A genuine interest for Art, whilst also having the motivation for independent study.

Relevance to further studies and careers:

Art is universally recognised as a valuable and versatile A level by institutions and employers because of the transferable skills it develops. It is valuable for the development of the skill of independent thought, organization and creativity. Traditionally, it can be combined with many other subjects, especially the Humanities and English Literature. Many students continue their studies at Art College, initially following a one year Foundation course at an Art College in their locality before embarking on a course in their chosen specialism at University.
