Course content and examination requirements:

The Business Studies course aims to provide you with a critical understanding of the internal functions of and the external impacts on business organisations.  You will be encouraged to develop skills in data manipulation and interpretation; presentation; planning; research.  These are all valuable skills which can be transferred to many different life experiences.

 

Year 12 - AS Units Year 13 - AS Units (full GCE)

Unit 1
Planning and Financing a Business
40% of AS level
20% of A level

One hour fifteen minutes written examination (60 marks)
Short answer questions and extended responses on a mini case study.

Unit 1
Strategies for Success
25% of A level

One hour forty five minutes written examination (80 marks)
Questions requiring extended answers based on an unseen case study, drawing upon knowledge from AS units.

Unit 2
Managing a Business
60% of AS level
30% of A level

One hour thirty minutes written examination (80 marks)
Compulsory, multi-part data response questions.

 

Unit 2
The Business Environment and Managing Change
25% of A level

One hour forty five minutes written examination (80 marks)
Pre-release research task leading to the first section of a two section examination.
Second section will consist of choice of essays.  All questions will be essay style and synoptic, therefore drawing upon knowledge from all four units.

Entry Requirements:

Business Studies as a subject in its own right is only studied in the Sixth Form and there are no specific entry requirements for the course.  Students will require the ability to adopt a logical and analytical approach towards given business scenarios; the ability to present well-reasoned and coherent arguments; the ability to handle and interpret data.

Relevance to further studies and careers:

Business Studies courses at university are very diverse.  With the skills gained through studying Business Studies there are many job opportunities in such areas as Banking, Insurance, Civil Service, Accountancy, Law, General Business and Commerce.
