Course content and examination requirements:

The aim of the Classical Civilisation A Level course is to encourage you to appreciate Classical Greek and Roman culture and society by studying in detail certain topics and texts which are intrinsically important and interesting. The course consists of four modules, two of which are studied in the first year and constitute an AS level, a further two are studied in the Upper Sixth to complete the whole A level.

Entry requirements:

Classical Civilisation as a subject in its own right is only studied in the Sixth Form and there are no specific entry requirements for the course.

Unit 1 Roman Society and Thought 50% of AS level 25% of A level One hour thirty minutes written examination – this unit considers Roman society and history through a study of Roman literature	Unit 1 Roman Britain: life in the outpost of the empire 25% of A level Two hours written examination – this unit looks at Romano-British society and history as depicted in the literary and archaeological record.
Unit 2 Greek Tragedy and its Context 50% of AS level 25% of A level One hour thirty minutes written examination – the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides are studied both as works of literature and as social documents.	Unit 2 Art and Architecture in the Greek World 25% of A level Two hours written examination – this unit looks at the sculpture, vase painting and architecture of the classical Greek world.

Relevance to further studies and careers:

Classical Civilisation can be studied at university as a single honours degree or as a joint degree with other subjects such as European Studies, Philosophy, English, Theology and History. Graduates have found employment in many fields including Management, Marketing, Financial and Personnel.
