Course content and examination requirements:

Progression to AS will be smooth as the topics, chosen for their relevance to young people, are familiar from GCSE work. You will develop a better understanding of Spanish culture and gain a more thorough knowledge of grammar to help express yourself more effectively. You will have the chance to study Spanish film and read or listen to articles and the news in Spanish online. Family relationships, healthy living, media and popular culture are some of the themes covered. Candidates will be required to spend time in a Spanish speaking country and a work experience programme abroad will be organised.

Year 12 - AS Units	Year 13 - A2 Units (full GCE)
Unit 1 Listening, Reading and Writing 70% of AS 35% of total A level marks A two hours written examination with a range of questions based on approximately five minutes of heard material and on a selection of written stimulus texts. Candidates will also respond in writing to a question based on one of the AS topics.	Unit 3 Listening, Reading and Writing 35% of total A level marks A two hours and thirty minutes written examination with a range of questions based on approximately six minutes of heard material and on a selection of written texts. Candidates will also respond in writing to a question based on one of the four A2 cultural topics.
Unit 2 Speaking Test 30% of AS 15% of total A level marks A thirty five minutes (including twenty minutes preparation time) speaking assessment. Candidates will discuss a Spanish stimulus card based on one of the AS topics and take part in a conversation covering 3 further AS topics.	Unit 4 Speaking Test 15% of total A level marks A thirty five minutes (including twenty minutes preparation time) speaking assessment. Candidates will present a point of view based on a Spanish stimulus card from one of the A2 topic areas and take part in a conversation covering 3 further A2 topics.

Unit 1

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade A is recommended.

Relevance to further studies and careers

Advanced knowledge of a language is an asset to any employer and provides a highly marketable skill in the business world. A language degree or a language combination degree demonstrates academic competence and hence entry into the higher professions. Common career destinations for Linguists are Law, Diplomatic Service, Banking, Journalism, Translating, Travel and Hospitality and Teaching.
