Art-endorsed—Textiles—Advanced CGE A2 (6TE03, 6TE04)
Course content and examination requirements:
The GCE in Textiles is designed to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to textiles. Successful students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary textiles practice and be able to produce artwork that embraces a range of ideas.
Textile design involves creation, selection and manipulation across a variety of practices. Contemporary practice is often a hybrid activity that brings together different features of textile disciplines, using combinations of different disciplines freely and often embracing both traditional and contemporary technologies.
The tools used in textile design are wide ranging, encompassing traditional hand crafts and computer-aided technology. Natural and manufactured materials including paper, wire, tissue, gauze, plastics, re-cycled packaging and cloths such as silk, wool, cotton, polyester and hessian are used to address aspects of design in fashion, furnishing and fine art.
In the context of this course, disciplines include constructed textiles, dyed textiles, printed textiles, fine art textiles and fashion textiles. Students will be required to work in one or more of these disciplines.

A genuine interest for Textiles, whilst also having the motivation for independent study.
Relevance to further studies and careers:
Textiles is universally recognised as a valuable and versatile A level by institutions and employers because of the transferable skills it develops. It is valuable for the development of the skill of independent thought, organization and creativity. Traditionally, it can be combined with many other subjects, especially the Humanities and English Literature. Many students continue their studies at Art College, initially following a one year Foundation course at an Art College in their locality before embarking on a course in their chosen specialism at University.
